WI LFPA Visits Cala Farm
Rodrigo Cala shares information with attendees about his farm.
On August 7, 2024 a group of 10 farmers and agriculture professionals joined the WI LFPA Program and Rodrigo Cala at Cala Farm to learn more about Rodrigo’s farm and how he supports farm to food access through the WI LFPA program.
Attendees first walked through the barnyard to see the hogs, ewes, and horses and then stopped to see the chicken barn. Cala Farm raises meat chickens for Tree-Range Farms where chickens are raised with ample outdoor access and sunflowers, corn and other canopying crops give birds shelter in the paddock.
We then moved to the produce fields to review how Rodrigo switched his focus from raising a multitude of different vegetables to growing only a few crops for the wholesale market. Crop rotation, weed pressure, soil fertility and pests were all discussed out in the field.
After the tour, participants networked and discussed the importance of the WI LFPA program and how farmers, food access partners and technical assistance providers can continue the good work into the future.
Thank you Rodrigo for your generous hospitality on your beautiful farm!
